The current edition of the Tasmanian Business Reporter features an article about The Lenna of Hobart’s owner Lloyd Clark and the refurbishment of the hotel.

A part of the refurbishment of the hotel, Mr. Clark has connected to Tas Gas’s natural gas network. Lenna has connected gas for hot water, heating, and cooking. Mr. Clark decided to make the switch as he was looking to reduce operational costs, and the predicted future increases in the costs of electricity made natural gas the more viable option.

In the article, Mr. Clark also talks about how he is feeling positive about the future of his business, and of the Tasmanian economy.

Tas Gas, in conjunction with the Launceston City Council, is doing the Wood Heater buyback program. This program last year had a total of 23 applicants for natural gas, and involves the replacement of old wood heaters with a cleaner source of heating, such as Natural Gas.

Each resident who decides to replace their wood heater with natural gas heating can receive a rebate of up to $750. Residents can also save an additional $3,000 off the price of connecting to gas when they install Rinnai hot water and flued heating system. There are also the added benefits of cleaner air, less pollution, and convenience.

Launceston City Council Mayor Albert van Zetten said “Improving Launceston’s air quality is a key priority for Council. This joint initiative will significantly reduce the cost for residents to switch to a cleaner heating option”.

Tas Gas Retail Marketing Manager Grayson Genders said “This is a really positive partnership between the industry and local government. Tas Gas Retail and its partners are delighted to be a part of it.”

Still like the look of your old log fire? Well you can replace your old fire with a gas fire. They provide the same warmth and ambiance as a log fire, but with much less pollution.

A campaign that promotes the benefits of natural gas has been launched by Tas Gas.

Tas Gas Retail general manager Russell Reid said independent research commissioned by the company found people already understood the significant cost savings of using natural gas compared with other energy sources.

“But the research revealed home owners were not aware of the other numerous benefits,” he said.

“The fact that energy costs have risen steadily in the past five years, and are predicted to continue to increase in the short to medium-term, are top of mind for most residents.

“But the research found that other benefits when comparing natural gas to other available energy sources – it is a clean burning fuel that is good for the environment, it delivers instant heat control and is perfectly suited for cooking and home heating – are not often considered.”

Mr Reid said the campaign had been designed to focus on the numerous “other benefits” and the many uses of natural gas in the home.

“While the new campaign does not specifically reference natural gas as a competitively priced alternative, the ongoing development of natural gas as an alternative energy source in Tasmania means homeowners can tap into a substantially lower cost and cleaner energy source,” he said.

“Natural gas is also a far more efficient form of energy than electricity, when used directly for heating and hot water. This is due to the intrinsic inefficiency of the electricity generation process.”

The new Tas Gas campaign features television advertising, press, direct mail and point of sale material. The web site – www.tasgas.com.au – has also been updated to reflect the key messages in the campaign.

On the 1st August 2011, the media launch for the wood heater buy back project took place at Helen and Mal Johnson’s house in Prospect. Helen and Mal were participants in last year’s program, where they replaced their wood heater with a free standing gas heater. They said that the heater provides the same ambiance as a wood heater, but without the mess. They also replaced their hot water cyclinder, which is providing them savings.

Helen and Mal invited Tas Gas Retail employees, the mayor of the Launceston City Council, Southern Cross, ABC radio and The Examiner into their home to talk about the benefits of making the switch, and how it has helped them and their home. The mayor also promoted the program by saying that the council is committed to increasing the air quality in Launceston.
